At the beginning of the binder, where we used to use the
colored tabs, suppliers made a 25-tab customized set of folders that could be labeled whatever the researcher desired. However, in the company we had to have rules so that all the file clerks and researchers who used the notebooks would find the same information in each binder.
The first three tabs were mandatory. The first
tab was labeled "Pedigree Charts," because it would become the Table of Contents for the direct-line Family Group Records to follow. This is where printed pedigree
charts would be filed. Many clients could have hundreds of pedigree charts. When these pedigree charts were printed, clerks were told to select the option to include all generations. This is called a cascading pedigree chart.
