The key component to this system is the identification number. Every individual has their own unique record identification number. And each family has their own family group record number. This means that if I want to file or retrieve a paper document that pertains to the John Smith family, whose family group record number is 38, I just have to open my notebook to the tab which is labeled 38, and that’s where I find all of the documents. Using an alphabetical filing system, however, it may take 5 or 10 minutes, or even longer to find the appropriate documents.
